We are thrilled to announce Achēv’s win at the 2024 Readers’ Choice Awards in Mississauga and Brampton! 

Achēv has been named the Diamond Winner of the 2024 Mississauga News Readers’ Choice Awards in the Best Non-Profit Agency, Best in Adult Education and Best Employment Agency categories. 

We have also been named the Diamond Winner of the 2024 Brampton Guardian Readers’ Choice Awards in the Best Employment Agency and Best in Career Training and Development categories. 

This marks our win for the fourth year in a row in Mississauga and the second time in Brampton! For the past 10 years, Achēv has proudly partnered with Volunteer Toronto, a collaboration that has brought many benefits to the community. During our partnership, Volunteer Toronto has provided numerous educational presentations to inspire, inform, and connect our clients to volunteerism and support their path to community involvement. In addition, Volunteer Toronto has supported Achēv’s Bridges to Employment clients for over 5 years by providing presentations and assistance in finding volunteering opportunities.

Achēv is excited to announce the launch of the CyberNauts Program, a partnership between Cyber Nations Foundation and Achēv. The CyberNauts program aims to equip learners with the skills and knowledge necessary to thrive in the rapidly growing field of cybersecurity through an immersive training program tailored to support participants facing multiple barriers to employment.

CyberNauts provides participants with direct pathways to meaningful employment upon successful completion of the program, ensuring that graduates not only gain valuable skills but also have clear routes to secure jobs in the cybersecurity sector.

“We are immensely grateful to our partners for their support through the Skills Development Fund,” said Claudette McGowan, Chair of Cyber Nations Foundation. “Their commitment enables us to provide this essential training and create meaningful employment pathways for individuals who might otherwise face significant obstacles in accessing such opportunities.”

“Achēv is pleased to partner with Cyber Nations Foundation on the CyberNaughts Cybersecurity Upskilling program”, said Tonie Chaltas, CEO of Achēv. “By providing access to high-quality training that leads to good-paying job opportunities, we are helping to pave the way for a brighter, more secure future for all participants.”

This program will provide cybersecurity training to 65 individuals from racialized and equity-seeking groups in Ontario. The program participants will gain comprehensive cybersecurity skills and industry-recognized certifications.

What is CyberNauts?

There are 3.5 million unfilled cybersecurity jobs worldwide and talent is needed for this critical industry. The program features the following:

  • Comprehensive Learning: Virtual sessions blending self-paced and live learning.
  • Hands-On Projects: Practical skills through real-world scenarios.
  • Community Support through networking opportunities with peers and mentors.
  • Earn CompTIA Security+ certification and post secondary micro-credentials.
  • Job placement opportunities for successful graduates.

 Achēv celebrated our second annual Achēvment Awards at a community breakfast this morning in Mississauga.

The first of its kind in Peel, the Achēvment Awards recognize people and organizations who foster inclusive workplaces, promote cross-sector collaboration, and have the courage to overcome barriers and fulfill dreams.

“Today we are celebrating the power of collaboration between our partners, clients, and the communities we serve,” said Achēv CEO Tonie Chaltas. “We hope our Achēvment Awards recipients will inspire other businesses, organizations, and individuals to work together to help put more people on a faster path to prosperity.”

Recipients of the 2024 Achēvment Awards are: 

  • Employer Partner, GFL Environmental Services Inc.
    GFL Environmental recognizes the value and importance of the skills and abilities that newcomers bring to Canadian workplaces and creates meaningful employment opportunities.
  • Community Partner, Brampton Library
    Brampton Library has worked closely with Achēv for over a decade to support our shared clients’ successful settlement, employment, and prosperity, particularly newcomers and people from equity-deserving groups. 
  • Volunteer, Achēv Board Chair, Epsit Jajal
    Epsit is a long-standing Achēv volunteer, whose leadership and commitment over nine years were critical to the organization’s governance, strategic vision, and success.
  • Client, Taqdees Mariam
    Taqdees used a low-interest micro-loan that she secured through Achēv to become certified as a nutritional practitioner in holistic medicine and launch her own business, The House of Shifa.

We’re excited to announce that Achēv is awarding scholarships to 6 eligible youth in Mississauga and Brampton to attend a 12-week Introduction to Home Renovation Training Program starting April 1, 2024, followed by continued employment coaching and job search support. The training will take place at the Skilled Trades College of Canada. The scholarships are funded by John Laing Charitable Trust and Mobilinx. 

Achēv remains committed to providing BIPOC youth with the skills needed for entrepreneurship and starting a rewarding career in the skilled trades sector. We believe that everyone deserves an equal opportunity to build a better life and successful future, and we are dedicated to ensuring BIPOC youth have the necessary tools to kickstart their career in skilled trades.

Achēv was proud to partner with Credit Canada in their 2023 Financial Literacy campaign. Our CEO Tonie Chaltas had participated in a panel discussion hosted by Canadian Club Toronto in November to discuss the unique barriers newcomers face when establishing a financial foundation in Canada. The panel of experts shared their insights, experiences, and opportunities to support newcomers’ financial wellbeing.

Tonie was also a guest on the “Moolala: Money Made Simple with Bruce Sellery” podcast to discuss some of the financial barriers newcomers face and how to navigate the job market as a newcomer.

Each November, Credit Canada joins the Financial Consumer Agency of Canada (FCAC) to engage with Canadians during Financial Literacy Month. For 2023, Credit Canada set out to develop a program that will provide value to the newcomers in the Canadian population and will live well beyond Financial Literacy Month.

Credit Canada launched a free, multilingual online learning program about credit, developed specifically for newcomers to Canada. The program aims to empower newcomers by providing them with the knowledge and skills to build strong credit in Canada. 

Available in 8 languages, the e-learning program will teach newcomers the basics of credit in Canada, help them establish a solid financial foundation, and boost their confidence. Each module takes 10-15 minutes to complete and includes short case studies, mini-quizzes and other interactive elements

Topics to be covered in the modules:

  • Essentials of Credit in Canada
  • How to Build Your Credit History in Canada
  • How to Improve Your Credit Score
  • What to Do If You Run Into Problems with Credit
